Atari Is Closing the VCS Store in February 2027 and Ending Support for the Console
Atari is winding down the Atari VCS, the console-PC hybrid it shipped to crowdfunding backers in December 2020. A notice dated 21 October 2026 on the console's page at atari.com says Atari has "stopped onboarding new games" and will shut the VCS software store early next year, with games on sale until 1 February 2027. Games already bought and downloaded will keep working. A longer statement on the Atari Club Discord server adds that an operating system update will cut the console loose from Atari's servers, that a Home Brew app will be pushed to every owner, and that Atari will then end support for the platform.
What Atari has announced
The notice on atari.com is short and signed "The Atari VCS Team". It says that "VCS owners will be able to purchase games through February 1, 2027" and that "After the store shuts down, owners will continue to be able to play the games they have purchased and downloaded to their VCS." It ends: "Thank you for playing with us." The same page now states that direct sales of the VCS hardware "ceased in 2025".
The Discord statement, reproduced in full by Delisted Games, goes further. It says Atari is "beginning the process of sun-setting our support for the Atari VCS", that the store shuts on 1 February 2027, and that games can be bought "through January 31, 2027". On what happens next, it reads: "After the store closes, our plan is to make an OS update available that allows you to migrate all functionality to your local machine, removing any dependencies on Atari infrastructure for authentication and software. Once that transition is complete, we will end support for the platform." Tom's Hardware quotes the same sentence, attributing it to a moderator of the Atari Club channel.
The two versions differ on the last day of sales. The atari.com notice says purchases are possible through 1 February; the Discord statement says through 31 January, with the store closing on 1 February. Anyone planning a last purchase should treat 31 January as the safe date.
Home Brew, and the end of redownloads
The more unusual part of the plan is what Atari says will replace the store. According to the Discord statement, Atari intends "to push the Atari Home Brew app to all players", which "will allow everyone to add new games to your VCS independently, so developers can continue to build apps for the VCS and share them with the community." Atari says it will post instructions for the OS migration and the Home Brew app "Early next year", and acknowledges: "We recognize that this is unwelcome news."
The catch came in a follow-up. Delisted Games reports that the Discord server's lead moderator, Mr Hare, confirmed on Discord that once purchased games have been migrated to the console, owners will "not be able to redownload games from the store". A game that is lost to a failed drive or a reset after that point cannot be restored from Atari. Delisted Games also counts "just over 300 games and apps" released on the store, with seven more put out after the announcement.

The VCS was always partly a PC, which softens the blow. Atari's page describes a PC Mode that "allows users to load optional Linux and Windows systems", and Tom's Hardware points out that the machine already had a PC mode owners could use. Atari has not said whether anything about PC Mode changes after support ends.
How the VCS got here
The console began as the Ataribox, revealed in June 2017, and was partly crowdfunded from May 2018 through a pre-sale on Indiegogo, according to Wikipedia, which cites Atari's own 2018 announcement. The Discord statement describes it differently, as "a one-off Kickstarter program". After several delays, backers received their units in December 2020 and the general release followed in June 2021, in Australia, New Zealand and North America. Wikipedia notes it was never released in Europe, Africa or Asia, and gives sales of more than 10,000 units as of the fourth quarter of 2020, from an Atari shareholder presentation; there is no later official figure.
Tom's Hardware, which reviewed it in July 2021, gives the price as $399 and the processor as an AMD Ryzen Embedded R1606 APU with 8GB of DDR4 memory and 32GB of eMMC storage, both upgradable. Atari's page lists the same memory and storage, and sold it as "ready for retro and modern gaming", alongside a Wireless Classic Joystick.
The decline was visible by the end of 2022. Notebookcheck reported in December 2022 that Atari's half-year report announced "the suspension of direct hardware manufacturing relationships, notably with regards to the Atari VCS", and that hardware and cartridge revenue had fallen "from €2.3 million to €0.2 million". Atari still held €1.6 million of VCS stock and spare parts at the time. Since then the company's hardware has moved toward recreations of its classic machines, such as the full-size 800XL recreation covered here this month.
How other store closures compared
Nintendo's last big store closure handled this differently. When Nintendo closed the Wii U and 3DS eShop to purchases on 27 March 2023, its support page said that "it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates" on those systems "for the foreseeable future". Atari's plan goes the other way: it removes the dependency on its servers entirely, which means owned games survive Atari's own infrastructure, but also that the store copy disappears.
What is not known yet
Atari has not given a date for the OS update, beyond "After the store closes", or for the end of support, beyond "Once that transition is complete". It has not said what the Home Brew app can install, how developers will distribute software through it, or whether games bought on the store can be backed up before or after migration. Whether the VCS's online services, such as streaming apps on its home screen, continue after support ends is also unaddressed. Atari says details will come early in 2027.
