MiSTer Gets a Virtual Boy Core With Real Stereoscopic Output
The Gap Closes
Developer Kitrinx has officially released a Virtual Boy core for MiSTer FPGA, filling one of the platform's more conspicuous remaining holes. The core supports CRT output and, more interestingly, offers multiple 3D presentation methods including a side-by-side mode compatible with 3D televisions. Save states work. Installation goes through the standard update_all script. To enable the 3D modes you need to toggle the "Eye Drawn" setting and set "Scale" to "Normal," which is the kind of detail that will save somebody an afternoon.
Why the Virtual Boy Is Hard
The Virtual Boy is an awkward preservation target for a reason most emulator screenshots hide. It was never a red and black flat display: it was two independent monochrome LED arrays scanned by oscillating mirrors, one per eye, producing genuine stereoscopic depth. Almost every software emulator flattens this to a single red image, which is faithful to the palette and completely unfaithful to the experience. A core that can output both eyes separately is preserving the thing the hardware was actually for.
Twenty-Two Games
The Virtual Boy's commercial life lasted less than a year and produced twenty-two games. Nintendo shipped it, apologised for it, and moved on. What survives is a small library containing a handful of genuinely good games, Virtual Boy Wario Land chief among them, trapped inside a device that is uncomfortable to use and increasingly expensive to buy in working condition. The displays fail with age in a well documented way, which makes an accurate FPGA implementation less of a novelty than it sounds.
A Strong Season for MiSTer
The Virtual Boy core follows Jotego's CPS3 beta in June, making this an unusually productive summer for a platform that runs on decade old development hardware and volunteer labour. MisterAddons confirmed the release publicly on the day it landed.
