
Jotego's CPS3 Core Brings Street Fighter III to MiSTer FPGA
The Board Everyone Said Was Too Hard
Jotego has released the first beta of a Capcom CPS3 core for MiSTer FPGA, and it is difficult to overstate what a milestone this is. CPS3 has spent years near the top of the list of boards considered impractical to implement in FPGA: it is memory hungry, uses a custom graphics pipeline unlike anything else Capcom shipped, and was designed around a CD-based data setup that complicates everything. Street Fighter III: New Generation and Red Earth are the first supported titles. Time Extension put it plainly in their headline: FPGA gaming history is being made.
What Works Today
This is a beta, and it has beta boundaries. The initial release supports the "No CD" arcade ROM sets and is limited to games that fit within a 64 MB SDRAM footprint, which rules out the larger later revisions for now. It is also Patreon gated, following Jotego's established pattern: patrons get early access, and the core goes public once it leaves beta. Anyone who has followed his CPS1 and CPS2 work knows that pattern ends with a free, well documented release.
Why CPS3 Specifically
Street Fighter III is the reason people care. Capcom's animators drew it at a level of detail that has never really been matched in the genre, and the board existed largely to push that art at a frame rate the arcade audience expected. Emulating it in software has been solved for years. Implementing it in reprogrammable logic, so the timing and the latency behave like the original cabinet, is a different problem entirely, and it is the problem MiSTer exists to solve.
A Strong Summer for MiSTer
The CPS3 beta did not arrive alone. Kitrinx released a Virtual Boy core in August with genuine stereoscopic output options, and the platform has been steadily filling in the gaps that once defined its limits. For a project that runs on a decade old development board and a community of unpaid developers, the pace of the last few months has been remarkable.
