
Sonic the Hedgehog (Game Gear)
Sonic on the Game Gear isn't the game you think it is. While it shares the name, characters, and general concept of the Genesis original, this is an entirely different game — built from the ground up by Ancient (the studio founded by Yuzo Koshiro's family, no less) for Sega's handheld hardware.
The game features twelve stages across six zones: Green Hill, Bridge, Jungle, Labyrinth, Scrap Brain, and Sky Base. The level design is tighter and more linear than the Genesis version, which makes sense for the smaller screen — you can't see as far ahead, so the game gives you more time to react.
The difficulty is notably higher than the Genesis game. Sonic feels heavier, the screen is smaller (meaning less reaction time for obstacles), and some boss fights are genuinely tough with only three hits before death and no rings recoverable after taking damage. The final Sky Base zone, in particular, is a serious challenge.
Visually, the game is impressive for the Game Gear. The sprites are colorful and well-animated, and the parallax scrolling backgrounds give the stages depth. The color palette is used effectively — Bridge Zone's sunset tones are particularly attractive.
The soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro (yes, the Streets of Rage composer) is excellent. Bridge Zone's theme is one of the catchiest pieces of 8-bit music ever composed. Green Hill has a completely original composition that stands alongside its Genesis counterpart.
The primary issue is the screen size. The Game Gear's resolution (160x144) means you can't see far ahead or below, which leads to deaths that feel cheap rather than earned. It's a hardware limitation, not a design flaw, but it impacts the experience.
Sonic on Game Gear is a hidden gem that deserves more recognition as its own distinct, well-crafted platformer.
