The track selection draws from Ridge Racer's history, remixing classic circuits into forward, reverse, and mirrored variants. The environments — coastal highways, neon-lit cities, alpine passes — are varied and visually striking. The recycling does become apparent in later tours, but the excellent drift mechanics keep the racing itself fresh.
Presentation
For a 2005 handheld game, Ridge Racer PSP is beautiful. The car models are detailed, the environments are rich with roadside scenery, and the sense of speed is convincing. The game targets 60fps and largely hits it, with dips to 30 in the most demanding scenes — a technical achievement that many PSP games couldn't match.
The soundtrack is classic Ridge Racer — high-energy electronic and dance tracks that drive the action without demanding attention. Sound design is crisp, with satisfying tire squeals and engine notes that change convincingly across the car roster.
